KNU Secretary General Pka Manh Shar shot dead in Thailand

One of the top leaders of Burma's biggest rebel group, the Karen National Union, has been shot dead in northern Thailand.

The man, Pado Mann Shar, who was general secretary of the group, was killed by two unidentified men at his home in the town of Mae Sot near the Burmese border. The motive for the attack is unclear.

The Karen National Union and its armed wing, the KNLA, have been fighting for an autonomous homeland for the Karen people in the east of Burma.
The Karen insurgency is one of the longest-running in the world.
